Workshop: Art & Contemplation

  • Mary Potter Community Centre 442 Durham Street North Christchurch, Canterbury, 8014 New Zealand (map)

During this workshop we’ll engage in contemplation through creative processes. There’ll be a focus on direct experience, somatic awareness, and the principles of process.

We’ll open to the direct experience of the Presence of Spirit through creative processes, working at the juncture of divine indwelling, inner impulse, and outer movement.

As we experience the mutual processes of moving and being moved, we might gain an experiential taste of the possibility of our action being shaped by our communion with Spirit.

We don’t have to know or understand anything in order to begin. It’s enough to begin with our affections, communing with the ‘isness’ of the Presence of Spirit, the arts materials and our sense of connection. And we don’t have to produce an impressive artwork. It’s enough to attend to the process of making, sensitive and responsive to what emerges.

As we move and are moved, led by the intelligence of our affections, a deep aesthetic appreciation of our inner and outer life develops. Greater intimacy with our experience generates greater insight into our experience as meaningful patterns and symbols emerge and synchronicity becomes visible. In this way, contemplative arts practice can contribute to psycho-emotional integration and effect greater coherence and harmony in our being, shaping more skilful action.

Workshops are formats of integral learning about particular aspects of spirituality and contemplative practice and how these are lived in daily life. Workshops include teaching periods, spiritual practices, creative and body-based inquiries, and group discussions. There are opportunities for personal reflection and interpersonal exchange, the shared wisdom of the group being key in developing insight and understanding.

I’m committed to supporting people in their engagement in spiritual practice and want my offerings to be accessible to people. If the cost of this offering is a barrier to your participation please contact me to express your interest and request a reduced fee.
